When It Turns Cold, Think WARM
With the recent dip in temperatures, we’ve seen more bikes coming into our workshop for minor repairs. Winter can be tough on your bike, but with the right care and attention, you can keep it in great condition throughout the colder months. If you’re wondering how to protect your bike in cold weather, whether you’re riding through icy streets or storing it until spring, these practical tips will help shield it from the elements and avoid costly repairs.
The easiest way to remember these tips? Just think WARM:
W: Wash and Go
Winter roads are often salted to prevent ice, but that salt can wreak havoc on your bike. If left unchecked, it can corrode key components like your chain, gears, and frame.
Give your bike a quick rinse after a ride with warm water to wash away grime. Use a gentle bike cleaner for tougher dirt, and always dry it thoroughly to prevent water from freezing in hard-to-reach places. Pay special attention to your chain, cassette, and brakes, as these are the most exposed to road salt.
A: Apply Oil to Keep Moving Parts Smooth
Cold weather can cause moving parts to stiffen, especially when water seeps in and freezes. Regularly lubricating your bike’s chain, gears, and cables helps prevent freezing and keeps everything running smoothly.
A good-quality lubricant will also protect against the extra wear and tear caused by winter conditions. Since oil doesn’t freeze like water, keeping your bike properly lubricated is one of the easiest ways to avoid winter breakdowns.
R: Rehome Your Bike Somewhere Warm and Dry
Cold temperatures and moisture are your bike’s worst enemies. If possible, store your bike in a garage, shed, or any covered space to shield it from frost and snow. Storing it indoors protects it from freezing conditions and keeps parts like cables and chains from stiffening and can significantly extend the life of its components. If indoor storage isn’t an option, a waterproof bike cover can help keep frost and moisture at bay.
M: Maintain and Protect Your Electric Bike Battery
If you have an electric bike, winter care becomes even more crucial. Cold temperatures can reduce your battery’s performance and range, so store the battery indoors overnight where it’s warm or use a battery cover or insulator while riding to maintain its temperature.
Proper storage and insulation can extend your battery’s lifespan and ensure it performs well throughout the winter.
